All objects by Cyrix
Cyrix founded in 1988 as a supplier for math-coprocessors for early x86 CPU's (80286, 80386). Cyrix's FasMath FPU's for the 80386 is faster than Intel's 80387.
It's early attemps on fabricating a CPU started in 1992; a pin-compatible 386 named 486SLC and 486DLC. These CPU's were enhanced 386 CPU's which performed somewhere between a 386 and 486 from Intel. In the 486-era Cyrix made interested 386-upgrades (the clock-doubled 486DRX2) to speed up old 386 systems. Cyrix eventually stepped into the real 486 marked and started working on a Pentium-clone in 1995. As work wasn't finished on the Pentium-clone Cyrix released the Cx5x86 which fitted into a 486-socket. The chip features some of the Pentium instructions (which made it possible to run MDK, although very slow) but compared to other 486 CPU's it ran cool and fast. And it even looks good with the little green heatsink! |
