IDT stands for Integrated Device Technology, a company founded in 1980. They made various hardware. IDT also marketed the WinChip, which is actually made by Centaur Technology (now owned by VIA) which founded in 1995.
Centaur created the WinChip using its experience from RISC CPU's. The WinChip is a simple and electrically efficient processor with similarities to the 486. As described with the IDT WinChip C6 200, my QDI Explorer II 250DM even recognizes this CPU as a 486DX.
After the end of socket 7 and the release of other (better) budget CPU's like the Celeron and the AMD K6-2 the WinChip couldn't survive. In 1999 the Centaur Technology division of IDT was sold to VIA and used the technology in the Cyrix III processors.
