Cirrus Logic started as Patil Systems in 1981. Since 1984 they changed name to Cirrus Logic and started focussing on PC components. Cirrus Logic became known by selling 2D graphic chips and frankly, they did a good job back then. I never heard people complaining about compatibility issues or bad performance with Cirrus Logic VLB boards.
In 1996 Cirrus Logic stepped out of the graphics market. Other companies were starting to build 3D chipsets (many failed, a few survived) and Cirrus Logic couldn't keep up.
