AMD 'Athens'

Athens is AMD's single-core 90nm Opteron for 8-way system. It's basically identical to Venus (1-way system) and Troy (2-way system) except that it can officially run in 8-way systems.

My first AMD Opteron engineering sample on socket 940 :). It boots up on my engineering sample MSI K8D Master-F but during P.O.S.T. it halts on the memory check. The check doesn't get past 514MB of RAM. Even when I swap out memory sticks and try different configurations it doesn't get past the 514MB mark. I've noticed that my Opteron 275 (production version) does exactly the same so it's probably my early S940 motherboard that's not co-operating.

This particular engineering sample has no information grooved into the heatspreader but rather like it's stamped on. As seen on the pictures this method is not very durable as the paint falls off. For those who want to know what was on the heatspreader:

There is not much information on the internet about this CPU. Unfortunatly I don't know the production date which makes it difficult to put it in a time frame. I suspect this is quite an early sample. The introduction of this CPU was in December 2004.

Based on the packaging of this CPU I think this is a 90nm model. The 130nm models used a ceramic packaging. > Read more
