S3 used to have good 2D-chips that ran (2D) DOS games very well in terms of performance and compatibility. Once the race of 3D-accelerators started, S3 couldn't keep up. These 'S3 Trio3D' cards didn't really do 3D; it ran slow with ugly dithering and sprites not displayed properly. Nevertheless it was a good 2D-card to pair up with a Voodoo 2 .
