S3 founded in 1989 and made a lot of 2D chips which ran pretty good and were popular at the time. Unfortunately they could not keep up with the 3D-violence of 3Dfx and later ATI and nVidia. The S3 ViRGE was S3's first Windows 3D-accelerator which offered poor and slow 3D-graphics. The ViRGE did sell in great quantities because of it's good 2D-performance.
S3 tried 3D again with the Savage 3D. It ran better but poor yields meant a slower clock frequency and drivers weren't mature yet. Eventually the technology was sold off to VIA. The technology ended up as UniChrome and Chrome9 (and DeltaChrome along with some other Chrome series). UniChrome and Chrome9 ended up as integrated VGA solution.
