Intel 'Katmai'

On 26 February 1999 Intel released the Pentium III processor. The first Pentium III was based on the Katmai core. An evolution of the Pentium II Deschutes. Notable differences can be found in the addition of SSE instructions and an improved L1 cache controller. The Pentium III was released in 450MHz and 500MHz versions with later increments to 550MHz and 600MHz. In Q3 of 1999 Intel also released 533B and 600B models with an 133MHz FSB.

Katmai still has off-die L2 cache like the Pentium II but with a slightly difference plastic CPU packaging for better cooling.

Just like this one but different sSpec number. This one came as OEM CPU, the SL37C originally was a boxed model (including box and cooler). > Read more

The same as this Pentium III 450 but 50MHz faster.

The Pentium III 'Katmai' is the first series of the Pentium III and came in speeds ranging from 450 to 600MHz in 50MHz increments. It was succeeded by the Pentium III 'Coppermine'. > Read more

In reality the first Pentium III CPU's (starting from 450MHz) were just Pentium II's with SSE instructions added and an improvement of the L1 cache controller. In my opinion this would still be a Pentium II and starting from the Pentium III 'Coppermine' a real Pentium III. The Pentium III 'Katmai' 450 is slightly faster than the Pentium II 450 in the benchmarks but that difference isn't noticeable during normal work or gaming. Especially back then as SSE optimized applications were scarce. > Read more
