Hey Thandor , it has been a long time since i posted anything decent here and yea after have been away from it all I decided to make a comeback, not in the mental capacity like I did back in the years 2001 - 20010, but still something to truly enjoy and also not leaving out some very rare and hard to find hardware parts that are not even 3dfx related, yea I found some ways to get hands on some very cool parts., so why not collect fully equipped retro PC's instead, works too right and sorry for being in the shadows for this long I really hope you have been doing well bud.

I miss our retro tech talks from back in the day, would be amazing to chat again sometime I have discord, I cna of course always dm you my ds if you use that lol.

Anyways I hope you are still around, glad you kept this old place online, I used to go as Gold Leader at the Gathering of Tweakers forums if you remember, Since 2013 I now run and own the official x-3dfx community at FB, we have around 1100 members and quite some great activity as well.

So here my cool ATi Cards I bought from December 08, 2025, which was my birthday to March 10 2026 which I added my secondary R100 board the Radeon AGP 64MB 128Bit DDR ViVo Retail with core /,mem speed of 183Mhz, it's PCB date is 0111, meaning my card was made in year 2001 during week 11, kind of a late build as I see it.

My coolest find was the mint in box ATi All In Wonder Radeon AGP 32MB 128Bit SG DDR Rev.A1 0042, this card was made in year 2000 during week 42, I got this card from a kind Italian seller from ebay.it (Italy) for a very generous deal, when the card arrived I found out that the fan didn't work and he gave me back 30 euros, replacement fans cost less than 9 EUR, even so the card runs fine even without the fan thanks to the low clockspeed of 166Mhz core/mem, the heatsink barely gets warm when gaming with it so yea not really worried.

The ATi Radeon 8500 AGP 64MB 128Bit DDR Rev.C1 0152 was the card I got for my 49th Birthday last year, from all the money I got I Picked it up for a decent deal from a kind German seller.

All cards work great so here they come and yes I use all of these in my current vintage systems.

These were the three reworks that were applied to that card:

01. 3Dfx Chuck Frame Buffer Chip was renewed
02. Solder Reflow was applied
03. Recap with 13x KEMET SMD Tantal Capacitors

Here the newly replaced Chuck Frame Buffer chip:

Here is where i was applying the thermal pads which have double sided sticky surfaces, makes it ideal to stick the heatsinks to the 3dfx Bruce & Chuck chips but also add a thermal compound solution at the same time:

Here some pics I made, after searching for this card for more than 10 years, all worth the patience in the end, I added my 1971 Lufthansa B747-230B the D-ABYD named: "Baden-Württemberg" with the R6 card I bought from my friend from Voodoo Alert Forums, Germany, to fit that scene, this also being the first Radeon AGP with 64MB 128Bi t DDR, I thought to match it with Lufthansa's first B747-200B sporting the Lufthansa Sunrise Delivery Livery from 1970 and my ATi hat, even tho I will try to find a better one, this one will just have to do for now:

And here my fastest retro PC which I currently have my in retro fleet of PC's which has these two cool graphics cards Matrox Parehlia AGP Universal 256MB 256Bit DDR Rev.A 5103, this was a git from a Matrox employee from Matrox HQ, Ireland, he told me only 1500 were made of the Universal AGP x4/x8 model of the Parhelia AGP 256MB DDR using the older Universal AGP x4/x8 slot, my card was from the last batch, I got it for 45 Eur with a batch of 6 other cards,a very generous guy.
That Parhelia being the main and a 3dfx Voodoo5 5500 PCI Macintosh 64MB Rev.A1 2900as for the secondary graphics card options:

As you can probably notice, is that my retro timeline use parts from 1997 - 2003, that was to me a very cool and fascinating time which was rich of the coolest parts I ever used in a personal computer, so I thought with these four builds to bring that forward and to it's place correctly and as best as I could, so far I am happy to what I have achieved from 2018 - 2016 with these four legendary builds.

Here my retro PC build log at Vogons; there I go as Gold Leader-B747, there you will see a far more in depth post of these four builds and the upgrades , changes and improvements I gave them as time rolls by:

Hey Obi, nice to see you're still in the retro business! Those early Radeon's are nice pieces. I guess somewhat underrated but general interest in them seems to increase. I always liked them too (as you know I have a bunch of prototypes of the early R100's, even one that is badged Rage 6).

The Gainwards are nice, too. Always wondered why they bothered to deviate from the 3Dfx reference design. Somehow glad they did because it stirs up the mix of standard V2's.

I'll look you up on Discord!

21 March 2026 15:34

Hey thanks, yea I thought just post here and see what happens :'D

As for the Gainwards well I went for them because they are a full inch shorter than the traditional 3Dfx Voodoo 2 reference design, as that Gainward placed the EDO ram chips in the vertical position instead of in the traditional horizontal way, the result are a pair of short cards.

Backfire made me that yellow hard PCB SLI bridge since the theme for this P3/E build is Gold & green, yellow comes closest to Gold and the V2's KEMET Tantalum Capacitors are also yellow so that fitted the Green & Gold livery nicely.

These photo's clearly show the perfect spacing between the Gainward V2's and my HDD's:
Image Image

Size wise; they are the perfect size, the Japanese Canopus V2's would also of been nice, but yea good luck finding those rofl, so I went the logical route with the Gainward Dragon 3000 PCI 12MB's instead.

It's Enermax EG351P-V PSU 350 Watt PSU has also been cleaned, fully recapped and given a full reflow as well:
Image Image

Image Image

It's never a wrong thing to do to recap literally every part you can let and get recapped, can't buy new parts so I went with letting get this Enermax PSU recapped the correct way, thanks to Backfire from the Voodoo Alert Forums, Germany, he has well over 48 years of electro engineering experience, his job is to maintain the APU's and Jet engines of TUI Airlines' Boeing 737 fleet, which he has been doing for the past 30 years, if parts are needed from Japan he orders the parts via his work with first class express shipping this helps cut costs such as import duties etc.

Every bit counts in the end.

24 March 2026 07:54

I see, I forgot that the Gainwards are shorter. Those flat cables now squeeze through a lot better with that extra space :).

That Enermax PSU is a strong unit. Good to have it recapped indeed, should provide plenty power for the years to come.

26 March 2026 22:56

Yea it sure will, nowadays recapping is a normal part of life as these old parts go, in may I have a special project upcoming with a 3dfx Voodoo4 4500 PCI 32MB< which will be modded to a 3dfx Voodoo4 4800 PCI Macintosh 64MB + DVI-D and the clock speed will be set to 183Mhz core/mem as this was the goal speed of the 4800 PCI, which never came out, the card will have 5ns SDRAM instead of 6ns, should be enough for the 183Mhz speed spec.

This card will be the secondary graphics card in the VP6 build, hence why I went for a L-Shaped Belkin USB 2.0 PCI card, already planning ahead for the V4 4800 PCI project, the L-card will offer the needed breathing space for the V4 PCI and being PCI Slot 2 the R8500 AGP DDR also has the needed breathing space for it's fan.
Image

As you can see, none of the cards have a power connector, so the 3dfx card won't have this either, this makes a 3dfx Voodoo4 4800 PCI as the best 3dfx option in this system or a 3dfx Voodoo4-2 4200 PCI_DVI 32MB 64Bit DDR Rev.A1 3900 which is near impossible to even get hands on, a Daytona PCI card that being, yea never mind that option, even I would not mind it either.

So yea, getting a regular 3dfx Voodoo4 4500 PCI 32MB Rev.A 3300 is step one, then I send it to Backfire for full Polymer recap + VRAM upgrade from 32MB 6ns SDRAM to 64MB 5ns SDRAM, a DVI-D will be added and a new Bios reading the following will be applied:

3dfx Voodoo4 4800 PCI Macintosh 64MB
By Backfire & Obi.

Default core mem of 183Mhz.

It's going to be a personal project with Backfire from Voodoo Alert Forums, Germany and myself, stay tuned for more :)

30 March 2026 19:56

That's going to be a nice project. A full fledged Voodoo4 :). I like the idea of keeping it tidy by only using cards that don't need extra power connectors.

How are you planning using both the Radeon and Voodoo4 at the same time monitor wise? Switch over the VGA cable or use a monitor that both supports D-SUB and DVI and switch the monitor?
