3Dfx started in 1994 and started producing SST-1 chips in 1996. SST-1 is the first generation Voodoo chips and because 3Dfx was started by Ross Smith, Gary Tarolli and Scott Sellers they came up with codename SST. Their first product, Voodoo Graphics, became accessible to the public when RAM prices lowered. Because 3Dfx had little competition, software developers started programming specific for the 3Dfx hardware. Games looked better and smoother than before and rendering was even faster than software rendering. The Voodoo Graphics setup still remained expensive because one had to buy a 2D-card for normal image processing and a 3D-card for the 3D-graphics. A list of all cards based on the SST-1 chip can be found here. |
In 1997 3Dfx announced the SST-96 and SST-2. The SST-2 is the successor of the Voodoo Graphics, the Voodoo 2. It boasts two TMU's (Texture Mapping Units), a higher clock-frequency and more RAM to utilize higher resolutions. The SST-96 was a Voodoo Graphics with on-board 2D-chip (either from Alliance or Macronix). It was released to offer a full solution (without the need of a seperate 2D-card like the Voodoo Graphics and Voodoo 2 needed) but compatibility was poor, the 2D-chip was by far not as good as an S3-chip and the Voodoo Graphics-part had to share RAM with the 2D-chip with caused a performance hit. Again, a list of SST-96 cards and a list of SST-2 cards.
The last official 3Dfx branded card before they changed their name to 3dfx, is the Voodoo Banshee. It's a scaled down Voodoo 2 (with just one TMU) but with an excellent performing 2D-chip integrated into one chip. It's also higher clocked than the Voodoo 2. The Banshee offered a good all in-one solution (as of terms for 2D/3D) with good performance. Games that only utilized one TMU ran faster on the Banshee due the higher clock and games that utilized both TMU's ran faster on the Voodoo II. At last but not least: a list of Banshee cards.
Because I own a few Voodoo 3 prototypes you can find Voodoo 3 cards here as well. The prototypes are made in the time that the company still operated under the flag with the capitol D. By the time production cards came, it was named 3dfx of which you can read more here.
