You can find the older 3Dfx cards and information about them here.
Since 1999, this company has been named 3dfx instead of 3Dfx and they changed the logo. All these changes fell together with the merger of STB (3dfx bought STB) to make in-house graphic cards. 3Dfx used to sell their chips to manufacturers like Diamond, Orchid, Creative and so on but decided to take matters in own hands by creating only 3dfx-branded cards. 3dfx had to compete with mainly nVidia in 1999. nVidia rocketed with the Riva TNT and especially Riva TNT 2. The fastest Riva TNT 2, the Ultra model, outperformed the Voodoo 3 and offered 32-bit rendering. Due to marketing and expectations of the customer the 32-bit rendering was quite an issue because the Voodoo 3 could only do 16-bit (although it's 22-bit rendered internal, making 16-bit 3dfx looking a lot better than nVidia's 16-bit rendering. |
Down below you can find the cards made by 3dfx which are based on the Avenger and VSA-100 chip. To see benchmarks of this lot; click here.
3dfx is also known for it's distinctive boxes for their cards. See these boxes for the Voodoo 4 and Voodoo 5 AGP versions for example. Each version has it's own color. |
